Thinking about Some Conversations with Bin & Looking at Julie Blackmon's Domestic Variations & Roger Ballen's Boarding House

Julie Blackmon Domestic Vacations

Roger Ballen Boarding House

Childhood is not a reality. Only place-names on maps. A nostalgia or a regret. A pair of glasses. A single page of a picture book.

The everyday is a hallucination. Nail polish & bent wire hangers. Photographs of.

Identity is an acceptance. Childhood can be a demand. A narrow band of red ribbon. A drip from an unknown liquid source.

The interior of a house is a terror of presence. It has no relation to the outside of a house.

You Know Who's Great? Julian Brolaski is Great.

I've been really loving gowanus atropolis from Ugly Duckling, which you can order here.

I love Brolaski's Hart Crane antique, clipped & clasping ear in the book. I love the way it's by turns all gender F-you & by other turns all gender-Fed comfy & by other turns not caring about gender. I love its lionization/pewterfication of Gowanus. I love reading the poems out loud.

Check out this one:

the pit of tutivillus

—julian brolaski

todo el tiemp quelque new atrocity
met w/ flies
the seer wit understanding
almost undercut hir prophecy

my muzzle will be made of moss
in the whinter
you think it’s music but it’s like lilies when they fester
all ovular moonlight tusking the apparatus

when I say lily I do mean the same
swete my sweteing
each arm asway on tender footing
who alone is burning plastic

That is so good! Read it again, with your mouth.

Didn't you love that? I knew you would. I know about these things.
